When we initially postponed Rock the Parkway, our hope was that the risks of COVID-19 pandemic would have been brought under control by late summer, which would have allowed us to safely hold the event on Aug. 29. The virus has since spread to more than 20,000 area residents and millions across the country. In light of this, we have spent the last few months working with the City of Kansas City; our host, Burns & McDonnell; and our charity partner, Children’s Mercy, to look at ways we might be able to hold the event — one of the largest running events in the Midwest — in a manner that would be safe for the nearly 6,000 area runners who registered, as well as for the hundreds of other runners from all over the U.S. who had planned to participate. Ultimately, we were not able to develop a plan that would enable us to get the race permitted and safely hold the event, so it will not be held this year.

We have come up with three options for registrants at this point:

  1. Stay with the 2020 race and participate virtually, when and where you like, in a manner that is safe and comfortable for you. If you choose this option, nothing more needs to be done with your registration. This is also true if you have already switched to the 2020 virtual option. You will be able to pick up your race shirt, bib number and finishers medal at a drive-through packet pickup at Burns & McDonnell on August 29 from 9am to 5pm (for half marathon registrants) or August 30 from noon to 5pm (for 5K registrants). If you live outside the area, we will work with you to see that you get your race items. We will provide additional information about packet pickup closer to that weekend.

  2. Transfer your registration to the 2021 Rock the Parkway event on August 28, 2021. We are uneasy about planning for our traditional April time slot in 2021 and hope that by moving the date to late Summer, you will be able to participate in an event that is as enjoyable for participants as past events have been. Given the fixed annual costs for the event, there are a limited number of transfer spots available to maintain the race’s financial viability in future years and they will be on a first come, first served basis.

  3. Transfer your registration to the 2022 Rock the Parkway event in April of 2022. We think we should be able to return to April for the 2022 event, which will be held either the weekend before or the weekend after Easter in 2022. Again, there are a limited number of transfer spots available.

If you want to transfer your registration to a future Rock the Parkway event, you will need to login to your profile at and select Manage Registration by your Rock The Parkway registration. You will then select Transfer Event located at the top right-hand side of the page and click on the Start Transfer button. Finally, you will select your event for 2021 or 2022 and complete your registration (no additional fee will be charged). You must select the same distance (half marathon or 5K) in the future race that you are transferring to as the distance that you signed up for in 2020.

If you are participating in the Heartland 39.3 Series in 2020, you will need to stay with the 2020 event and participate virtually to also receive your Series award. If you are willing to forego the Series award for 2020, you are free to transfer to a future Rock the Parkway event.

As you noted when you registered, your registration is not refundable, and we are no longer transferring Rock the Parkway registrants to other KC Running Company races later this year.

COVID-19 has dramatically changed almost everything in our lives, including Rock the Parkway. But our kids need your help now more than ever. You can still show your love for our charity partner, Children’s Mercy, by donating or fundraising to be part of Team Children’s Mercy. Learn more here.

Thank you for your patience and ongoing support for this event. We look forward to seeing you at a future Rock the Parkway event!
